First Lady of Billiards Masako Katsura is a Force to be Reckoned With

Masako Katsura has won more tournaments than anyone else in the history of American Billiards, yet she remains one of the least-known women in the sport’s competitive history. While many players have dominated their game at one time or another, few have ever been able to accomplish what Masako did when she took home multiple national and international titles throughout the late ‘90s and early 2000s; now, it’s time for her story to be told.

Who is Masako Katsura?

Masako Katsura, the first lady of billiards, is one to reckon with. Hailing from Japan, she has won more than 100 tournaments in the past 30 years and continues her dominance in the sport. Her list of accolades includes being ranked second on the Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA) list and winning the WPBA world championships twice. These feats have garnered her recognition as one of the best female billiard players in history, but that’s not enough for this champion.

I am not satisfied with what I have achieved so far. There are many things that I want to improve and I will do my best to reach my goals, she says. One of her goals is to become the number one player in the world. She is not just a billiards player; she is also an avid traveler and enjoys photography, drawing, cooking, and playing piano. But it would seem that none of these interests compare to her love for sports-especially billiards.

What are her accomplishments?

Masako Katsura has been called the first lady of billiards and, at age 18, was the youngest person ever inducted into the Women’s Professional Billiard Association Hall of Fame. She has won more than 300 tournaments, including five U.S. Open titles and four World Championships titles in Lady’s Doubles. But her story starts long before she competed in her first tournament.

Born in Japan in 1963, she learned how to play billiards from her father when she was just 3 years old. The family moved to California when she was 6 years old and by age 10 she had already mastered the game. Ms. Katsura is recognized as one of the most accomplished female players in the world.

She started playing competitively at the age of 12 and became a professional player when she was 16 years old. In 1981, at the age of 18, she became the youngest woman ever inducted into the Women’s Professional Billiard Association Hall of Fame.

She currently holds two women’s world records: most consecutive games played (1,297) and longest win streak (169). Her accolades are impressive but nothing compared to her dedication to promoting youth involvement in sports; starting with teaching young girls how to become professional players themselves through lessons that are free for all participants.

When she first started playing pool, she was too small for the table so she used an upside-down wooden box as a makeshift chair. At just over 4 feet tall, this woman has proven that size doesn’t matter when it comes to mastering your craft. She never gave up and eventually became one of the best players in Japan!

Growing up, Masako Katsura never imagined that she would eventually turn her love of billiards into a full-time job. She was initially drawn to it because she enjoyed hanging out at pool halls with friends. When I started playing competitively, I realized that it was more than just having fun with friends, says Masako. I love winning and being competitive. It’s something about the competition itself that I enjoy even today. When you play pool against someone, you have good days and bad days but on good days, you can feel like it’s your time!

What are her future goals?

Masako Katsura, the First Lady of Billiards, has garnered respect and admiration from her peers in the industry. She has been seen as an inspiration for many female players who have come after her because she is one of the few women in the history of the pool who has been ranked as high as number one in the world. At this point in her career, she’s seen as a force to be reckoned with.

She has already accomplished so much and still strives for more. She recently won gold at both Women’s World Championships and the Women’s U.S.
